Ancestry uprooted.
Season 2 of Mayans brought a unique challenge of pushing the intensity of the “Tempest” like rivalry in a border biker gang. Both brothers vying for a position at the top spot, while also having an intense connection with their family and heritage. And heritage is what stood out during my research, taking the literally meaning of Mayans and tying it back to the characters ancestry. Modern day warriors.
Given a brief to tie season-2 to the first ID, “Mayan Calendar”, I started to explore the metaphor that our characters are akin to the Mayan temples their ancestors once built. Artifacts grappling with internal conflict are uprooted and sent into turmoil. Playing on the connection between the calendar and temples, while adding in modern day catholic iconograph, I hoped to bring season 2 into an evolved space.
The goal for Legion S2 was to highlight the surreal landscape of Davids mind as he entered his guru phase. Being set in the 60s but with concepts of the future left a wide landscape to test in. I stuck with patterns and symbols that represented the 1960s, but kept the rendering ultra photo real to keep things grounded in the future. There was so much RnD for this project, it so hard to choose what to showcase.
A Library Visualized
Trying to showcase a library of nearly 20 years can be hard… Making it visually interesting can be even harder. By creating Cg holograms we wanted to bring some of Fx’s older shows, visually, into the future. Seamless transitions, timing and flow helped keep the viewer engaged. All culminating into a galaxy of content housed by Disney, but still quintessentially FX.
A continuation of Snowfall’s progressive title sequence. The shine of gold devolving. The dam breaking. The life cycle of the drug game in 80s LA.
